Immersion Week in Mathematics
June 18-22 at Education Development Center in Newton, Massachusetts
Mornings: Monday - Thursday
For the first four days of the institute, we will spend the mornings (8 - 11:45 am) as a group investigating mathematics questions together. From 11:45 to 12:00, participants will reflect on the mathematics in a journal. For an example of the type of mathematics in which participants will engage, click here.
Afternoons: Monday – Thursday
We will devote the first four afternoons to investigating the questions participants bring to the institute.
Participants will present their questions to the whole group on the first afternoon. On subsequent afternoons, participants will work
independently or in small groups on those questions. On Thursday afternoon, participants will present progress they have made. At the end of each day
(3:45 - 4:00), participants will reflect on their work in journals. For examples of research projects, click here.
Friday
After spending four days engaging together
in the kinds of mathematics experiences such a course would provide, we will step back from the mathematics and spend Friday engaging in the “nuts and bolts”
work of designing such a course for graduate students.
